Where is Jackson Hole Wyoming?

Jackson Hole is located in the northwestern corner of the cowboy state of Wyoming right on the doorstep of the Grand Teton National Park. The town of Jackson is 12 miles away from Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Jackson Hole Wyoming is just south of Yellowstone National Park and it’s a 5 hour drive northeast of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Flights to Jackson Hole

Teton Village at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is 21 miles by road in winter from the Jackson Airport, a drive that takes about 35 minutes. The Jackson airport receives direct flights from a dozen US cities including Dallas, Denver, Houston, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, Atlanta and New York. Jackson airport closes regularly during and after snow storms, so you might need to keep your itinerary a little flexible. Another gateway airport is in Salt Lake City, about a 5 hour drive from Jackson.

Shuttle buses and a plethora of taxi services are available to get you from the Jackson airport to Teton Village or the town of Jackson. Many of the deluxe Jackson hotels offer free shuttles between the airport and hotel (some offer scheduled shuttles whilst others are on-demand).

Alternatively, all the major car rental companies have outlets at the airport or in Jackson, so getting a car is easy.

Driving to Jackson Hole

If you’re only destination is Jackson Hole you probably don’t need a car, but if you’re on a road trip of multiple ski areas (+/- an Ikon Pass) you'll want to have a 4WD or AWD with snow tyres. If you’re coming from Utah or Grand Targhee, the only real challenge is getting over Teton Pass. This challenge will vary depending on the weather, and during storms it can close for avalanche control. Check road conditions before setting out.

The drive between the town of Jackson and Teton Village at the base of the Jackson Hole Resort is almost completely flat and there are no windy sections. It’s an incredibly easy drive, with your only potential impediments being traffic jams on a powder day and/or when there's a moose on the loose. Teton Village is on Highway 390 via Highway 22. Don’t let your GPS take you on summer roads out near the airport.

As to be expected for a ski resort with a traffic problem, it costs a lot to park right near the ski resort, a little to park in the Ranch Lot from where you need to catch a shuttle, and it costs nothing to park your car waaaaay down the road at the Transit Center and get a bus from there.

Buses Between Teton Village and Jackson

If staying in Jackson and you don’t have a car, buses run to the resort and stop outside the tram terminal. The local bus system is called START (Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit). It’s rather cheap but you have to use exact change or use the Start Pay app. For a ski resort with a massive traffic and parking problem, you think they’d just make it free.

The START buses have a convenient number of stops in Jackson town. The main shuttles between Jackson and Jackson Hole start really early in the morning, but for return trips they only go until about 6:30pm to 7pm. So if you’re staying in Teton Village, the bus system isn’t convenient for going to Jackson for dinner and drinks. There are also buses around the town of Jackson, so depending on the location of your lodging, you may need to catch a bus to go out on the town or to get to the shuttle bus to the ski resort during the day.

Some of the Jackson hotels offer free shuttles to the ski resort. Examples include: Homewood Suites by Hilton Jackson, Antler Inn, Snow King Resort, The Lodge at Jackson Hole, the Wort Hotel, Elk Country Inn, and The Lexington at Jackson Hole.

Other Ski Resorts Nearby

Snow King is a cracking little hill right in the town of Jackson. It’s great for some quick, cheap freshies if you can’t get to the main hole..... I mean hill.

Grand Targhee on the other side of the range is accessible via Teton Pass through Idaho. This is powder heaven for advanced intermediates. See our review of Grand Targhee. The Grand Targhee Resort runs shuttles from Jackson and Teton Village to Grand Targhee at a reasonable price, and it arrives well in time for first lifts.

Many of the Utah ski resorts are within easy driving distance. There are various companies that run private shuttles between Park City and Jackson Hole, or there are inexpensive buses from Salt Lake City (or Park City) to Jackson on the Mountain States Express.
